La Grande beats visiting Weiser, 11-1

 by Casey Kellas/The Observer

The La Grande baseball team kicked off the 2013 campaign with an 11-1 victory over visiting Weiser Friday at Optimist Field.

The Tigers rode a strong performance by starting pitcher Kaleb White, who pitched five innings, while striking out seven and allowing just four hits.

“That was a real good opener,” LHS head coach Mark Lanman said.

“Kids hit the ball well. We did a good job of getting hits with runners in scoring position. And Kaleb pitched real well. I’m real happy.”

After a scoreless first inning, Tyson Wicklander got the Tigers on the board in the second when he scored on a wild pitch.

Wicklander drove in two more runs in the third inning on a single, before Brandon Cedarholm came in to score later in the inning to make it 4-0.

Wicklander and Josh Gambill both scored in the inning and La Grande was well in control, especially with White keeping the Weiser bats at bay.

“We haven’t been outside a whole ton,” Lanman said.

“We went over and played in Pendleton Monday and that was probably our fifth or sixth time being outside. But the kids did good today.”

La Grande added three runs in the fourth inning before Weiser got on the board in the top of the sixth inning.

But the Tigers put the game away in the bottom of the sixth when J.C. Rogers drove in Wicklander and Garrett Avila drew a bases-loaded walk to put the 10-run rule into effect.

Wicklander finished 3 for 3, while Mitch Workinger was 2 for 4 at the plate.

The Tigers finished with nine hits. Eli Childs replaced White on the hill in the sixth.

La Grande will be back in action Tuesday when it travels to Burns. The Hilanders are 0-2 this season after dropping a pair of games to Ontario (11-1, 12-2) this weekend.
