La Grande’s Lexus Miller-Moylan ,left, and Erin Bodfish ,right, celebrate a 7-0 win against Mac-Hi Tuesday.
MILTON-FREEWATER — Love for the ball is how La Grande soccer head coach Sam Brown described the play of his girls team Tuesday.
Top-ranked La Grande improved its impressive scoring differential with a 7-0 Gretaer Oregon League win against Mac-Hi.
“This was probably our best performance of the year,” Brown said.
“We love the ball. We always want the ball. And when we lose possession of the ball, we work hard to give it back,” Brown said, of his definition of love for the ball. “It’s a phrase I stole from FC Barcelona. It’s a type of play that emphasizes
It’s been a key during the impressive 11-0-0 start to the season for La Grande.
It was a much better showing at Milton-Freewater than the last meeting between the two teams, a 3-2 win by the Tigers Oct 1.
The Tigers have only been involved in a pair of one-goal wins. A meeting against Pendleton last Saturday turned into a 1-0 win, the only time this season La Grande has been held to a lone goal, and the last meeting against the Pioneers.
The Tigers have outscored the opposition 71-2 so far this season.
Jasmine Smith, who started the season in a goal drought, has been unstoppable throughout the middle of the season. The senior opened the scoring in the 13th minute into the match. She added her second goal off a corner kick from Haley White six minutes later.
Erin Bodfish helped Smith get a quick hat trick, as Smith scored again in the 28th minute.
Then it was Smith’s turn to assist, helping White score, giving La Grande a 4-0 lead 36 minutes into the first half.
White assisted on the final goal of the opening half, finding Lexus Miller-Moylan to start another string of goals.
Miller-Moylan finished her hat trick in the second half, scoring at the 52nd and 64th minute.
White finished with three assists to go with her goal.
Alissa Welberg assisted Miller-Moylan on the final goal of the match.
La Grande is 4-0-0 in the GOL with two games left in the schedule. The Tigers will travel to Ontario for a 2 p.m. match-up Friday. La Grande wraps up the regular season with a match at Baker Oct. 22.
With a pair of wins the Tigers should be able to hold on to the No. 1 ranking in the OSAA state rankings, giving them home field advantage in the playoffs.
