HERMISTON — A solid opening for the La Grande boys track and field team may provide a shot of confidence to a young group.

Wesley Burgess and Nur Sofe highlighted the season opening meet in Hermiston Friday.

Burgess took first in the 100-meter dash, and third in the 200-meter dash.

Sofe claimed both the 110- high hurdles and 300-meter hurdle events.

Dylan Whitelock-Wolff started his track season off the a bang.

The senior collected a second-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles and took first in the high jump.

It’s the first varsity event for Whitelock-Wolff in track and field.

“It was great to see (Dylan) get off to a great start,” La Grande head coach Duane Smiley said. “All-around it was a very good first meet for our boys team.”

The girls team looked more like a MASH unit.

A short squad still found a small margin of success.

Shelby Miller finished third in the 1,500-meter run and the high jump.

Janelle Mattes brought home the lone first-place finish.

Mattes was the lone girl to earn a mark in the pole vault. She finished at 6-feet, 6-inches.
