TURN THE PAIGE: The Tigers’ Paige Stanton beats Riverside’s Lidia Velazquez to the ball. The Observer/ BARRETT HENDERSON The La Grande girls soccer team shot 16 times versus Riverside on
Saturday. However, the Tigers did not put one of those shots in the
net, and tied the Pirates, 0-0.
“The girls did a really good job of working together,” La Grande
head coach Sarah Androlewicz said. “We passed very well in the second
half, but we really struggled with our shots. We are not placing our
shots. It’s right to the goalkeeper each time.”
The Tigers had their chances to score with 12 shots on goal, but
could not put one past Riverside goalkeeper, Candice Grider. La Grande
goalkeeper Shelby Miller finished with three saves in her shutout.
“We did a good job. I wish we could have got more shots on goal when the goalkeeper was not standing there. (Riverside) got a little more tired than we did with no subs, and we should have had this game,” Miller said.
The Pirates had no substitutes on their bench the entire game. “We had a lot of girls injured and we just played with what we were dealt with,” Riverside head coach Paul Keefer said. “The girls are tough and we played hard. I’m very proud of them.”
“They stuck to it the whole time, you have to give them credit. The way they played with no subs is amazing,” Androlewicz said.
The Pirates were the closest at scoring, when Amy Kegler’s shot hit the crossbar in the 31st minute. Kegler nearly found the net again five minutes later as her shot went just over the crossbar.
La Grande had six shots on goal in the first four minutes of the second half. “At the half we told them to settle the ball, relax and play our game. In the second half, the girls were seeing their passes and taking good shots. They got a little discouraged when those shots were not going in right away,” Androlewicz said.
In the 63rd minute, Riverside’s Yaretsy Peralta had a breakaway toward the La Grande goal. Miller charged at Peralta and took the ball away, ending any chance at a go-ahead score.
“Shelby came with so much composure and confidence. She distributed the ball very well to her teammates and they needed that. She is kind of like that backbone that keeps us together,” Androlewicz said.
The Pirates had a chance again in the 73rd minute. Riverside crossed the ball in front of the La Grande net and the ball was loose near the goalkeeper’s box. But, Lidia Velazquez’s shot went to the right of the net.
The Tigers closed the game with a pair of corner kicks in the final two minutes. La Grande failed to get any shot near the Riverside net.
The Pirates had fewer shots in the game, but came closer to scoring than the Tigers. La Grande shot early on some excellent opportunities.
“The girls did very well. We were proud of them,” Androlewicz said.
The Tigers return to the field Tuesday, hosting Hermiston.
