ISLAND CITY —MC Hammer broadcasted across the speakers Friday, rapping and jamming in timely fashion.

Remember him? The millionaire who rose to fame, then plummeted into bankruptcy?

La Grande softball symbolized this ex-rapper versus Ontario— rising, falling, and ultimately splitting this Greater Oregon League doubleheader, 5-2, 6-7.

Look, Look, Look, as Hammer would sing, La Grande is in danger of missing the playoffs.

“We show signs of greatness, and we show signs of being a young team,” La Grande coach Kevin Kohr said.“We made some great plays, and then some not-so-great plays.”

The great plays? A double play from Paige Aldred and Carley Miller; RBI singles from Lindsay Willis and Aldred; and a diving catch by left fielder Jacey Childs.

The not-so-great plays? Six La Grande errors in Game 2 —offsetting yet another strong pitching performance from starter Boo Christman.

Wind. Plant. Toss.

Christman strikeout.

Wind. Plant. Toss.

Another Christman strikeout.

Eleven in the opener. Four in the sequel. Fifteen Ontario batters sending a nasty wind gust across the field, fanning at drops and fastballs.

U Can’t Touch This?

That Hammer tune now belongs to this Tigers hurler.

“We had a great pitching performance out of Boo in both games,” Kohr said. “She buckled down and got the job done.”

Her Tigers did not in Game 2.

Errors. Stranded runners. More errors. More stranded runners. All of it has Christman & Co. saying “split” today, rather than “sweep.”

And Ontario is saying its Too Legit to Quit — just like Hammer — with its Game 2 response.

“It’s just hard when you play good ball the first game,” Kohr said, “and we turn around and have the errors that we did that second game.”

And it turns the GOL standings into this: Ontario is 3-5. So is La Grande. Only two playoff spots are available. And both trail Baker and Mac-Hi.

So lots of work remains for these Tigers.

But as Kohr would say,

and Hammer would sing, La Grande is a Family Affair — the players care about one another. They have fun together. And anything can happen as the season winds down.

“It’s all going to come down to the last weekend of the season to see who takes those last two playoff spots,” Kohr said. “You never know what’s going to happen.”
