Saturday at Eastern Oregon University. It was the first home meet of
the season for the Tigers.
The format for the race was each team’s No. 1 runner would run against the other team’s No. 1 runner, and No. 2 against No. 2.
Racing in front of friends and family members, the Tigers seemed to find some success.
Head coach Laura Schwartz has said that her team likes to run in packs. Well, that was on full display Saturday as the Tigers had four runners finish within five seconds of each other.
For the boys team, senior Nur Sofe finished first in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 10:44:36. Teammate Nick Hackney was right behind Sofe and came in with a time of 10:47:39.
Emerson Hovekamp and Conor Wood were next with times of 10:48:36 and 10:49:46 respectively.
On the girls team, sophomore Mollee Shaw placed second in the 3,000-meter race with a time of 13:24:81.
Baker’s Mellissa Clarke came in first place at 13:10:86. Allison Escobar, Ally Paine and Riley Neer finished fourth through sixth for La Grande.
Harriers handle large field
RICHLAND, Wash. — The Elgin and Union cross country teams competed at the Richland Invitational Saturday along with a crowded field.
Steven Flippo was the top performer for the Huskies, finishing with a time of 19:58 in the three-mile run. Daniel Flippo and Austin Horn came in with times of 20:24 and 21:38.
On the girls side for Elgin, Jessie Bottger finished at 22:38 followed by teammate Courtney Yokum at 23:16.
Tom Sheehy of Union was the top local competitor, finishing 22nd in his heat with a time of 15:54. Gabriel O’ Reilly was not far behind, placing 71st with a time of 16:45 for the Bobcats.
Kate Stewart finished third in her heat with a time of 20:09 for Union, while Madelaine Olsen and Kathryn Hepler finished within just minutes of each other for the girls team.
Allan Schroeder of Mount Spokane came in first place on the boys side with a time of 14:55, and Katie Knight from North Central was the top female performer at 17:56.
