Tigers take GOL opener against Pioneers
MILTON-FREEWATER — La Grande made short work of Mac-Hi to open up the Greater Oregon League volleyball schedule.
The Tigers got off to a slow start, a continuing trend, but still managed to sweep the match winning 25-17, 25-6 and 25-11.
“It’s something that carried over from the North Marion Tournament,” La Grande head coach Melinda Becker-Bisenius said. “We got started a little bit slow, and that’s something we’re trying to avoid.
“The girls got refocused for the second set. Give (Mac-Hi) lots of credit. They came out to play. We just needed to be more aggressive with our serves and our attacks.”
La Grande ramped up the serving game in the second set, led by Kendall Kirland. The senior had a run of 11 straight points during the 25-6 win.
In the third set, it was Kali Avilia reeling off 10 straight points to close the match 25-11.
Avilia finished with six aces on the night. She added a team-high 12 assists and two digs.
Kirland had five aces and dished out 10 assists.
Anna Grigsby and Cassie Brownell each had seven kills.
Brownell also had six digs.
Brandi Blackman had a team-high eight digs.
La Grande will not be back on the floor until Sept. 26 at Ontario.
