UNION — The No. 1-ranked Union/Cove softball team upped its winning streak to 10 games with three victories over the weekend.
The Lady Cats swept Grant Union on Friday 9-0, 5-0, and handed Elgin/Imbler a 7-3 loss on Saturday.
“It was a good weekend for us,” Union/Cove head coach Paul Phillips said. “Those are three big wins.”
In Game 1 against the Prospectors on Friday, Union/Cove rode a one-hit performance by pitcher Dani Sturm, who went five innings and struck out six to earn the victory.
Amber Fiorito finished 2-for-4 at the plate. As a team, Union/Cove finished with eight hits.
Carsyn Roberts stole the show in Game 2.
The sophomore pitcher threw a no-hitter. She struck out five and walked just one of the 22 batters she faced on the day.
Kaci Langford led the Lady Cats at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored.
“Our defense played really well. We ran the bases aggressively and made good plays on defense,” Phillips said.
The Lady Cats continued to roll on Saturday against Elgin/Imbler.
Union/Cove took a 4-0 lead after the second inning before the Ravens got back into the game with a two-run fourth.
But Union/Cove got out of a bases-loaded jam and answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth to give itself a cushion.
Sturm got her second win of the weekend, striking out nine and allowing just four hits.
Roberts finished 3-for-4 with three runs, while Keesha Sarman went 2-for-4 with a triple.
Sturm, Viki McCabe and Kindra Moore all went 2-for-3.
Danika McIntosh took the loss for Elgin/Imbler, striking out two.
“Elgin/Imbler is a much improved team,” Phillips said. “They made us earn that win. They have some good athletes.”
Union/Cove is now 12-1 overall and 3-0 in the Special District 6.
Elgin/Imbler is 1-4 overall and 0-1 in district, while Grant Union is 5-7 overall and 3-2 within the district.
The Lady Cats will travel to play Wallowa on Tuesday for a single game at 4 p.m.
Wallowa will then go to Union for a doubleheader on Thursday starting at 3 p.m.
Wallowa is 0-2 this year.
