Totally Toby

By Pat Perkins

Observer Staff Writer

For a pass-first, shoot-second point guard, Jerome Toby did a lot of both in Eastern Oregon Universitys Quinn Classic mens basketball tournament.

The senior was a perfect shooter in Sundays 73-69 win over Trinity Western, going 8-for-8 from the field, including 3-for-3 from 3-point range, and 2-for-2 from the free throw line.

He also had five assists, contributing to the 22 points put up by Trevor Exline and the 10 scored by Neil Collins.

We come out and run our stuff and there are times when I have the opportunity to shoot, said Toby, who also had 21 points Friday against Carroll and was named to the all-tournament team.

It doesnt hurt having guys that can knock their shots down. It makes my job as a point guard a lot easier.

Nowhere was Tobys shooting more on display than in the final two minutes. He took a pass from Jeremy McLean (six assists) and drilled a 3-pointer with 1:46 left that gave Eastern a 65-63 lead.

After a couple of Trinity free throws, Eastern ran the shot clock down and Toby sank a jumper before the buzzer for the Mountaineers final lead, 67-65.

McLean had two free throws and Exline four in the final 30 seconds.

We played our best basketball in spurts tonight, two or three minute spurts, Eastern Oregon coach Art Furman said. We defended well down the stretch. We didnt give them easy looks and we didnt give them easy offensive putbacks.

Thats what hurt Eastern (3-1) in Fridays loss to Carroll. The Saints dominated the offensive boards in that game, but Eastern had a 14-10 advantage Sunday against Trinity (4-13).

Exline had five offensive rebounds and put most of them back for part of his 22 points. Collins was 5-for-6 from the field, and he had eight rebounds, three of them offensive.

As in all their wins this season, the Mountaineers had to come from behind in the second half. Eastern trailed by three at halftime but built a 44-37 lead at 14:22 behind Exline. Trinity rallied and had its biggest second-half lead, 63-58, with 3:10 to play after a 3-pointer by Brad Unger.

Eastern started to press in the backcourt, and that forced a Trinity travel that preceded a pair of free throws by Exline. After another Trinity turnover at its end of the court, Toby hit his 3-pointer.

Our guys did a real good job of reaching down, getting that little extra, Furman said. We have some guys that are competitive.
