COVE — Turnovers brought the Leopards football team back to earth against St. Paul Friday.

Cove (1-1) fell 28-18 a week after knocking off 2007 state champion Mohawk.

“We came out flat,” Leopards head coach Todd Shirley said. “I’m not sure why.

“We had chances to get back in the game, but made a few big mistakes.”

Cove pulled within two points, 14-12, following a 50-yard strike from Jered Witty to Scott DelCurto.

St. Paul answered with 14-straight points to ice the game.

Justin Brainerd led the team with 37 yards on 14 carries.

Cove will travel to Echo for a 2 p.m. game Thursday.

MORO — It’s tough for a coach to see anything wrong in a 50-0 road win, but Joseph head coach Rusty Eschler did.

“We made a lot of mistakes last week and we wanted to improve on that,” Eschler said. “We still had some mistakes, but not as many.”

The Eagles improved to 2-0 on the season, defeating Sherman County 50-0.

Erik Steen led Joseph with 216 yards passing. The Eagles amassed a total of 234 yards rushing.

The highlight of the game may have been Grant Marcum’s 64-yard punt return for a touchdown.

“The offense came around. Our defense has been strong the past two weeks. Overall, I am real happy with the kids,” Eschler said.

Complete stats were not available.

Joseph will host Arlington Friday at 4 p.m.

IMBLER — In sports there are two main things that can beat a team, the opponent and injuries. The Imbler football team fell victim to both Friday night.

Dufur defeated the Panthers 54-34, but not before Imbler imploded with injuries.

“We had to play with quite a few younger kids,” Panthers head coach Lee Lowe said. “They played hard, but made mental mistakes. You kind of expect that with the inexperience though.”

Imbler lost Nick West during the week, and will not have him back for at least two weeks. West led the Panthers ground attack last week with 136 yards rushing.

“Injuries happen. We’re just trying to get everyone back healthy and will not play them until they are,” Lowe said.

Imbler did use Bryan Mills sparingly. The junior returned to his first action since last year’s state championship. Mills caught two passes for 45 yards and played a few downs on special teams.

Imbler will host Sherman County Friday at 2 p.m.
