BAKER — Chests heaving. Stomachs turning. Arms, legs, throats, calves, thighs and hamstrings burning.

All this pain, all this agony, all this gut-busting work — beginning on that first chilly day of practice — was geared toward this Old Oregon League District track meet Saturday at Baker High.

And now, 20 local athletes are reaping the benefits for such dedication, earning a trip to Western Oregon University Friday (11 a.m.) for the OSAA state meet, hoping to be crowned individual kings and queens of Oregon.

This district event brought about an expectation and surprise — Joseph boys carried the former, Imbler girls the latter, and each placed second behind Crane teams.

We start with those surprising Panthers.

“For us to come in second behind Crane with the numbers that we have is amazing,” said Imbler Panthers coach Heidi Bowers, referencing her 15 track athletes.

 “That was awesome.”

As was the Panthers’ Stephanie Anthony, Reva West and Lindsay Martin.

Anthony placed first in the long jump (15-2), second in the triple jump (31-8/2); West second in the pole vault (7-0); Martin first in the grueling 800-meter race (2:36.94).

Behind these powerful Panthers was the Joseph girls team, led by Colby Patton, Megan Yost and Lena Moro.

Patton placed first in the 100-high hurdles (17.75), second in the 300-low hurdles (49.63).  Yost won the javelin (116-11), Moro the triple jump (32-10 1⁄2), and each joined Amber Shear on the second-place

4 x 100-meter relay (53.99) and 4 x 400-meter relay teams (4:24.67).

Also, Wallowa Cougars  Natalie Millar (1,500 meters, 5:35.56) and Mallory Turner (400 meters, 1:04.26) placed first and second, respectively,   and Candra Clark (Powder Valley) placed second in the shot put (32-8), making it 10 local girls headed to Monmouth.

On to the boys.

Joseph athletes Devin Patton (high jump, 6-0), Kenny Lathrop (800-meters, 2:11.47) and Chris Harshman (pole vault, 12-0) placed first in their events, and each joined Sam Garnett on the second place 4 x 400-meter relay team (3:43.49).

Joining these Eagles at Western Oregon is Clancy Warnock, who won the javelin event (165-03), and Ben Garnett, who placed second in shot put (44-06).

Second place finishes were also recorded by Wallowa Cougars Brandon Mahon (100 meters, 11.86) and Price Both (1,500 meters, 4:46.42), along with Cove’s Jered Witty (javelin, 154-01).

And it was an impressive day for the Panthers’ Nick West, who placed second in the 110-high hurdles (17.8) and first in the 300-intermediate hurdles (43.00) in back-to-back races, earning the label “great athlete,” from coach Bowers.

So that’s 20 local athletes from an Eastern Oregon region headed to a Western Oregon region. The pain, the agony and the gut-busing work earned this trip — and it may lead to something even more special.

State champions? Kings and queens of Oregon?

We’ll see.

“I wish I could take all of them to states for how hard they work,” Bowers said. “They’re just a hard working group of kids.”

It’s about discipline, says Eagles coach John Roberts.

“Their work ethic is good for me,” he said. “If not, I usually do not put up with them.”
