UNION CHARGES INTO DISTRICT PLAYOFFS

ATHENA — The Union Bobcats softball team got the job done Saturday by thumping Weston-McEwen 15-0, 9-3 Saturday to take the second spot at the four-team district tournament this weekend.

The Bobcats (11-5 Eastern Oregon League) will play Culver in the second game at the tournament.

Pine-Eagle (12-4) split with Nyssa Saturday. The Spartans lost 7-3 then bounced back with a 6-4 win in eight innings over the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs ended in third place (10-6).

The Spartans will play Pilot Rock (19-1) in the first game at district. The Game 1 winner clinches the No. 1 seed at state. The loser of Game 1 will play the winner of Game 2 for the No. 2 seed at state.

The Bobcats showed no mercy in the first game against Weston-McEwen.

"We knocked them back on their heels in the second inning and kept going," Union coach Steve Robertson said.

The Bobcats punched in five runs in the second inning and seven runs in the third.

Union's Jennifer Sasser pitched a four-hitter in the first game and a seven-hitter in the second.

"Sasser had her best day," Robertson said. "She finished her senior weekend great."

Robertson said the hitting was very good.

"We hit the ball hard all day," he said.

This doubleheader Saturday was our "best hitting day," he said.
