UNION COUNTY BOYS END STATE TOURNEY WITH LOSS
ASTORIA The Union County 15-Year-Old Babe Ruth boys acquitted themselves well again, but in the end, only two base hits doomed them to a 4-2 loss against Astoria Monday.
The loss ends the boys' run in the state tournament. Union County went 1-3 in the tournament, with two of the losses being close.
Travis Hudson pitched two innings, and Jordan Lanman pitched the final five innings, giving up just one hit. In all, Union County pitchers only gave up a total of four hits on the day.
Just one of Astoria's runs was earned. "Fielding errors just killed us," said coach Mark Lanman.
Hudson and Mitch Myers had hits for Union County, while Lanman and Kyle Witty had sacrifice flies for RBIs.
The team scored 21 runs the previous two games combined, but against Astoria, "we just couldn't hit," said coach Lanman. "The kids hit the ball hard. They just hit it right at someone."
Lanman said that, all in all, Union County did great at the tournament and the boys gave 100 percent. He said Witty in particular played great behind the plate, especially keeping base runners at bay. Astoria had just one stolen base Monday.
