With runners on first and second base and two outs, Union Countys furious seventh-inning rally fell one run short Wednesday.

The Union County all-stars fell 14-13 to Pendleton, a team they shut out 12-0 Sunday, at the District 3 Girls Little League Majors Softball Tournament here at Pioneer Park.

Union entered the bottom of the seventh inning trailing 14-8 after Pendleton scored four runs in the top of the frame.

But Unions offense, which was shut out in the fourth and fifth innings, awoke.

After scoring one run, Union loaded the bases with one out. Carrie Stratton ripped a line drive that bounced off Pendletons first basemans leg and into right field. Two throwing errors later, Stratton was on third base and three runs had scored to pull Union within 14-12.

Christina McGilvary then stepped up to the plate and connected, scoring Stratton. But McGilvary was called out on a close play at first base for the second out.

Savannah Wilhelm and Whitney Carman were walked, giving Union the tying and go-ahead runs on base.

With two outs, Katy Puckett was caught looking at a third strike and the final out, leaving Union short of advancing to a title bout with La Grande.

Union stormed out to a 7-1 lead through two innings, but Pendleton exploded for six runs in the top of the third off six hits and three walks.

Pendleton would go on to take a 10-8 lead heading into the final inning, where it scored four runs off five hits, two walks and one batter hit by a pitch.

Alexis Humphrey led Pendleton with four hits. Sarah Roach and Brittney Oles added two hits each.

Union was paced by Katie Griffin, Allie Burgess and Keri Reynolds, who had three hits each.

Pendleton will play La Grande today at 5 p.m. for the title. If La Grande loses, a second game will be played between the two teams at 2 p.m. Friday.
