UNION GIRLS RIDING HIGH INTO PLAYOFFS

UNION — The Union softball girls head into postseason on a roll after back-to-back doubleheader sweeps the past week.

Union, the Eastern Oregon Softball League, East Division champs, swept Weston-McEwen Monday in a rainout make-up, eliminating the TigerScots from the postseason.

Jennifer Brotherton won both games in a pair of pitchers' duels. There were only 17 hits total by both teams in the doubleheader, but the Bobcats made theirs count, winning 2-1 and 4-0.

Brotherton gave up one run in 14 innings and, in fact, has given up only two runs in her last 28 innings for a four-game earned run average of 0.50.

Coach Steve Robertson said Union didn't play its best ball, but the Bobcats showed they can find a way to win when they aren't at their sharpest.

"We didn't play especially well, but we played well enough to win," Robertson said.

In game one, Union made six errors, but the girls clamped down on defense when they had to, as the TigerScots stranded nine base runners, including three in the third inning.

In game two, Union played much better defense, making just one error. "In that first game, we were really flat for whatever reason," said Robertson.

Union finishes its league season with a 14-2 record and enters the district tournament as a No. 1 seed. Union will play fellow No. 1 seed Pilot Rock in its tournament opener at Eastern Oregon University Saturday.
