UNION PITCHING COMES UP BIG

If you cant score, you cant win.

Just ask any opponent playing Union County after the first two rounds here at the District 3 Girls Little League Majors Softball Tournament.

Union Countys 11-12 year-old all-star team posted back-to-back 12-0 wins over Pendleton Sunday and Milton-Freewater Saturday behind two no-hit pitching performances.

Jennifer Brotherton shut down Pendleton from the circle and Keri Reynolds did the same against Milton-Freewater as Union Countys two games lasted only four innings apiece.

Mandy Griffin led Union with three hits against Pendleton. Carrie Stratton and Cassidy Olsen added two hits apiece.

Union County will play La Grande at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the championship semifinals.

The games are being played at Sam Marcum and Restroom fields at Pioneer Park.

La Grande advanced by beating Baker City 14-11 Sunday and edging Triangle of Athena 11-10 on Saturday.

Bailey Ackley, Calli Wetstein and Tia Rhodes had two hits apiece for La Grande against Baker, which broke a 10-all sixth-inning tie.

Ackley and Rhodes added three hits each during a come-from-behind win over Triangle. La Grande scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to win 11-10.

Wallowa Valley remained alive in the consolation bracket by beating Milton-Freewater 11-6 Sunday. The loss eliminated Milton-Freewater from the tournament.

Kerri Gleasman paced Wallowa with two hits.

Wallowa Valley had a furious rally in its 11-10 loss to Pendleton Saturday.

Pendleton took a 9-0 lead through four innings before Wallowa Valley scored 10 runs in the final three innings, including nine in the bottom of the seventh.

Kay Ann Layton led Wallowa with two hits.

In other Saturday games, Baker City edged Pilot Rock, 6-4.

In consolation play, Pilot Rock eliminated Triangle of Athena Sunday behind an 11-0 win.
