UNION Timely hitting enabled the Union Bobcats to earn a split against Pine-Eagle in Eastern Oregon League softball action Friday.
The Bobcats (1-1 league) lost game 1 by a score of 5-3 before bouncing back with a 15-5 win in game 2.
"We were much more disciplined hitting in the second game," Union coach Steve Robertson said.
The Spartans (1-1 league) did not go quietly after the Bobcats built a 5-0 lead at the end of two innings in game 2. They scored five runs to tie the game heading into the fourth.
Then, the Bobcats scored a run in the fourth and erupted for nine more in the sixth to end the game because of the 10-run mercy rule.
"We were just moving runners around," Robertson said. "We were just doing all the things we needed to do the things we didn't do in the first game."
In game 1, the Bobcats made three errors in the fifth to let the Spartans get back in the game. The Spartans scored three runs in the inning to take the lead for good.
"Pine-Eagle hit the ball hard all day," Robertson said. "We didn't make the plays."
In the sixth, pitcher Jennifer Sasser hit a Spartan and then Pine-Eagle smacked back-to-back doubles to pick up another run.
The Bobcats scored one run in the seventh but it was not enough to catch the Spartans.
Game 2 was a better outing for the most part.
"We didn't put them away," Robertson said. "We didn't let down. We kept coming at them."
The Bobcats need to improve in some areas, he said.
"There are some places that we're looking pretty good," Robertson said. "We're still not disciplined enough hitting."
He said the Bobcats were swinging at bad pitches and were too aggressive at times.
In the first game, they got on base with five walks, while in the second there were 10.
"Part of that was their pitching," Robertson said. "They didn't throw strikes. We were waiting and making them throw us strikes."
He said Bobcat catcher Jaycee Waite had a tremendous day.
"She just worked hard," Robertson said. "She blocked the ball."
The Bobcats travel to Idaho to take on Melba in one non-league game Saturday.
They return to league play at home with a 2 p.m. Tuesday doubleheader against Weston-McEwen.
Union's Sasser had no walks on the day and issued nine strikeouts.
