ELGIN — The Union Bobcats are in a two-way tie for second place in the Eastern Oregon League after their 5-0 and 12-4 softball sweep over Elgin Saturday.

The Bobcats (8-4 league) are tied with Nyssa for the second spot in the coming district tournament. Pine-Eagle leads the league at 9-3.

Weston-McEwen split with Nyssa Saturday to put its record at 5-7. Weston-McEwen will not catch Nyssa or Union in the standings.

"We came back really well," Union coach Steve Robertson said.

The Bobcats were in first place at the season's midway point but split with Nyssa and were swept by Pine-Eagle the last two weeks.

"We were intense but relaxed," Robertson said. "We played hard and had fun."

Union's Melissa Helmer tallied four RBI. Union's Jennifer Sasser and Kallin Prince combined for two walks on the day.

The Huskies (0-12 league) kept battling back. In the top of the third inning of the first game, with the score 3-0 in favor of Union, Elgin second baseman Keeri Phelps snatched a would-be hit and fired it to first baseman Leanne Foster to complete a double play.

In the bottom of the fourth inning of the second game, Foster jumped on a pitch from Sasser and blasted it over the right field fence for a two-run home run. Lacie Heighes led off with a double, and the Huskies trailed 9-2.

The Bobcats responded with two more runs in the top of the fifth.
