By The Observer

UNION Union chalked up its second softball win of the season Monday when it beat Pine-Eagle 11-5.

Keyed by a five-run third inning, Unions offense continued to steamroll opponents.

We hit the ball well. We only had three strikeouts in the first game and two of those were from inexperienced players, the Bobcats coach Steve Robertson said. We hit a lot of line drives. Three times we got doubled off (in both games) on line drives.

But Union (2-0) still made contact and, after heading into the bottom of the third inning tied 1-1, erupted for five runs on five hits, one walk and one batter hit by a pitch, with RBI singles from Deanna Hall, Jennifer Dodds, Christy Pierce and Jennifer Sasser.

Lana Weitlauf led Union with three hits. Hall, Kallin Prince and Sasser had two hits apiece. Pierce added two RBIs, and Hall had two stolen bases.

Sasser struck out 11 batters and allowed five hits and one walk. She allowed three hits in the seventh inning when Union held an 11-2 lead.

In the junior varsity game, Pine-Eagle scored six runs in the opening inning and never looked back, winning 22-8.

They scored six runs in the first inning when it should have been three-and-out, Robertson said. We just didnt make the plays behind the pitcher.

Union continued to hit the ball hard, striking out only two times in six innings.

I feel good on the day. In the first game we played good defense and hit the ball hard. In the second game, we still hit the ball hard and the pitchers didnt throw bad, we just didnt make the plays defensively, Robertson said.

Union travels to Nyssa Friday for one varsity and one JV game. On Saturday, the Bobcats host Heppner for two varsity contests.
