IMBLER — Anytime a team turns the ball over 35 times, the outcome most likely will not swing their way.

Saturday was no exception as Imbler’s girls basketball team forced Condon-Wheeler (3-6) to turn the ball over 35 times en route to a 61-16 rout.

“I thought we started out pretty flat,” Imbler head coach Barry Bowers said. “But we went to a half court trap and that kind of picked up the pace or us.”

The Panthers (9-0) may have played their best defense of the young season. The Knights failed to even get a shot off on nine straight possessions in the second quarter.

Condon-Wheeler would finish the first half shooting only 11 shots, making three.

“We’ve had a tough preseason schedule,” Barry Bowers said. “This was only the second 1A team we have played. But we like a tough schedule because from here on out it’s league play and now we’re prepared.”

Imbler came away with 29 steals, with the majority coming in the second quarter.

After outscoring the Knights 21-6 in the first quarter, the Panthers put away their opponents in the decisive second period outscoring Condon-Wheeler 20-2.

Kira Poe came off the bench to lead Imbler with 16 points. Demetria Thompson added 13 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds. Sarah Bowers finished with 10 points.

“Today was good for us,” Sarah Bowers said. “We really wanted to protect our home court. We always wish for the best challenge we can have, but it’s always good to be able to slow things down and work on things.”

The Knight’s Elise Heidy had a game-high 10 rebounds along with six points.

The Panthers turned the 35 turnovers into 39 points compared to Condon-Wheeler’s six points off turnovers.

Imbler outscored the Knights 20-8 in the second half, including 11-0 in the final quarter.

Currently, the Panthers are ranked No. 3 in Class 1A, but will await Tuesday’s new rankings.

Imbler will begin Old Oregon League play Thursday with a huge game at No. 1 Joseph.

“The girls are excited to play Joseph,” Barry Bowers said. “What’s a better way to start league play than the top two current teams in the league?”

Thursday tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Eagles crush Nixyaawii

JOSEPH — The Joseph girls basketball team proved that it is still a title contender in Class 1A with a 47-28 rout over No. 4 Nixyaawii Saturday.

The Golden Eagles (7-1) entered the game undefeated, but left with their first loss.

The Baker City state tournament-bound pair of teams looked very similar on paper, but the Eagles created some separation Saturday.

Joseph (7-1) jumped out to an early 13-6 lead at the end of the first quarter before stretching the lead to 28-17 at halftime.

Shelby Harshman and Anna Bird each scored 13 points for the Eagles and Nicke Parks added 12.

Joseph’s defense held Nixyaawii to under 20 percent shooting from the field.

After defeating No. 4, the Eagles will open the league schedule with No. 3 Imbler on Thursday night at Joseph.
