TIGHT SQUEEZE: Union County’s Brandon Cederholm is tagged out at home by the Snake River Valley Americans’ catcher during UC’s 13-3 opening game victory at the North Oregon state tournament. The Observer/BARRETT HENDERSON Good teams sometimes have to be patient and wait. That’s exactly what
the Union County 13-year-old Babe Ruth baseball team had to do Tuesday
in its opening game at the North Oregon state tournament.
After defeating the Snake River Valley Americans 11-6 just 11 days
in the District 3 tournament, the Americans gave Union County all it
could handle Tuesday night at Optimist Field.
Union County only had a 1-0 lead on the Americans after four innings
before two breakout innings in the fifth and sixth to overwhelm Snake
River Valley, 13-3.
“We came out flat again,” Union County manager Shaun Cederholm said. “I think defensively that was the best game we have played all year. Once we got going, it was pretty hard to stop us.
“The Americans have improved quite a bit since the district tournament. They came out here and fought. I think our kids may have thought they’d come out and run right over them. It took us a little bit to realize it was going to take our best to win this game.”
After fantastic pitching through the first four innings Union County broke the game open with six runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
Casey Robertson followed an RBI double with a two RBI single to centerfield.
“We didn’t play very well to start,” Robertson said. “But, I think once we started hitting the ball we played great. We’re going to try and work on not leaving so many runners on base.”
Union County left 10 runners on base in the game.
Union County plays Tualatin Hills today at 4 p.m. Tualitin beat Hermiston, 6-1, Tuesday.
