But throw in nine errors into the game and there’s a different outcome.
Union County dropped its opening game in the 14-year-old Babe Ruth All-Star State Tournament with a 10-0 loss to Hermiston Wednesday.
Peasley worked on a shut-out until the errors became too much to dodge.
Seven Union County miscues allowed 10 runs to score in the fifth and sixth innings.
Union County will play 4 p.m. today.
Union County holds on for a win
THE DALLES — A team known for small ball more than big runs jumped out to a big lead and held on tight.
The Union County 13-year-old Babe Ruth All-Star team picked up a 10-9 win against The Dalles in its opening game of the state tournament Wednesday.
Led by multiple hits by Michael Humber, Hayden Albrecht and Blu Risseuw, Union County jumped out to a 9-3 lead through three innings.
Kaleb Poor came on in relief to shut the door on The Dalles and earn a save.
Seth Matson picked up the win.
“It’s great to start off any tournament with a win,” Union County manager Greg Poor said. “I’m real pleased with how the kids handled the pressure. It’s the first state tournament for these kids, and they did a great job.”
Union County was scheduled play Pendleton at 9 a.m. today.
La Grande rallies twice to reach quarterfinals
EUGENE — Late inning heroics carried the La Grande 9/10-year-old Little League All-Star team into the quarterfinals of the state tournament Wednesday.
La Grande used key hits to come back twice during a 12-11 win against West Emerald.
Zack Jacobs and J.C. Rodgers came up with the big hits in the sixth to spark and end the game.
 The Observer/PAUL HARDER “It’s different kids getting it done,” La Grande manager Tony Boyd said. “(Jacob and J.C.) did a great job. (The rally) wouldn’t have been possible without my assistant coach (Craig) Jacobs keeping the kids going.”
Kurt Boyd and Alec Cranford gave La Grande a 7-6 lead in the fifth.
But West Emerald responded with five runs in the sixth.
La Grande loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the sixth, but trailed 11-9 with two outs.
Cranford came up with another clutch single to cut the lead to one.
Rodgers ended the game with a line drive down the third base line to bring home two runs.
La Grande will face Centennial in the quarterfinals at 3 p.m. today.
