Union/Cove boys run to fourth place in Bend

Sipp leads Bobcat runners at Oxford Classic Invitatonal

BEND — Union/Cove had three boys finish under 18 minutes for the 5,000-kilometer Oxford Classic cross country invitational Friday at Drake Park in Bend.

That helped the Bobcats grab a fourth-place finish in the boys division race, behind a pair of 5A Idaho schools and a 4A Oregon team.

Centennial won the team title with 55 points, followed by Borah (69 and Tillamook (121).

Union placed fourth with 126 points, just five points behind Tillamook.

Hood River Valley was fifth (140), followed by Summit (sixth, 172), South Medford (seventh, 182), Klamath Union (eighth, 202), Crook County (ninth, 231) and Nampa Christian of Idaho was 10th with 231 points.

Ken Sipp led the Bobcat charge Friday, taking 11th place with a time of 17:36, while teammate Ethan Black was 14th in 17:39.5 and Riley Sheehy came in 22nd in 17:57.

For Sipp, it was a two-second drop in his best time this season, while Black missed his best time by three seconds. For Riley Sheehy, it was a seasonal best by 26 seconds.

Samuel O’Reilly was 31st with a time of 18:10, a personal record by 51 seconds, according to the coach.

For Zach Wylie, his 48th place finish in 18:36 was a dramatic 93-second improvement in his times.

“He skipped the 19 minutes and went straight to the 18-minutes,” coach Sheehy joked.

Daniel Colton placed 65th in 18:51, while Cory Andrews came in 78th with a time of 19:09.

For Colton, it was a seasonal best time by 25 seconds, while it was a personal record for Andrews by 35 seconds.

In the junior vasity boys race, Harris Lackey placed 21st in 19:30, a personal record by five seconds.

Chase Stewart was 37th, in 20:26. That was a personal best improvement by 106 seconds.

Jaren Hackwith dropped his best time by more than two minutes to finish 120th in 24:42, while Scott Yeager got a personal record by almost two-and-a-half minutes when he placed 121st in 24:42.

According to the coach, Yeager is coming back from an injury.

“The guys are starting to look very good as a team,” the coach said.

“Our boys ran very well, particularly our third through seven runners Riley, Samuel, Zach, Daniel and Cory.

“Each of those guys improved their times significantly over previous races.”

Union will travel to Weston-McEwen to compete in the Eastern Oregon 2A/1A invitational next.
