The Vipers, Northeast Oregon's ASA 18-under girls softball team, has been busy this summer — and successful.

It participated in four tournaments in July and took third at the Western Summer Nationals July 27-28.

The team played nine games over three days against teams from Hawaii, Alaska, Yamhill, Salem and Eugene.

Pitcher Megan Caldwell, catcher Meghan Henderson and first baseman Lauren Sternfeld were named to the all-tournament team.

Henderson had an in-park home run, three triples and doubles on the weekend. Caldwell recorded two triples and a couple doubles. Sternfeld played great defense, coaches said.

Right before the national tournament, the team went 4-1 in Newberg to capture second place in a tournament there. It lost in the championship game against a team it had beat earlier.

The team did not place in its second tournament in Spokane.

It placed fourth at the Boise River Shootout in its first appearance in early July.

Other girls on the team are La Grande High School players Kinsey Chadwick, Des McCoy, Lacy Griffin, Caylin Goss, Amanda Marcum, Kylie Lanman, Bethany Wolford, Heather Hampton, and recent graduate Chelsea Long. Holli Barton of Wallowa, Alysun Burns of Riverside, and Colbi Robertson of Union are also on the team.

The team's next tournament is in Spokane the last weekend of August.
