BAKER CITY — The Wallowa basketball girls surged ahead 16-5 in the first quarter of their District 4-1A playoff opener against Harper Thursday and won going away 50-29.

Despite the easy victory, Wallowa coach Greg Oveson felt the girls could play much better — and needed to play better if they want to win their second-round game.

"Our defense was poor. I don't know if we were looking ahead," Oveson said. "We did enough things right to win."

Wallowa (17-5), the No. 2 seed at the tournament, got 11 points from Amanda Wilson and 10 from Sarah Bomberger. While Oveson wasn't pleased with the defense, the Cougars did steal the ball 13 times and forced 26 Harper turnovers.

Harper scored just 16 points after three quarters as the Cougars took a 40-16 lead, then cruised in the fourth.

Wallowa plays at 8:45 p.m. today against Crane, which beat Spray Thursday night 50-40.

If Wallowa wins tonight, the Cougars will move on to the District championship game and qualify for the state 1A tournament in Baker City beginning March 5.
