WALLOWA, JOSEPH HARRIERS PREPARE FOR NEW SEASON

By Raenelle Kwock

Staff Writer

The cross country season is underway. Wallowa, Joseph, Enterprise and La Grande are preparing for the Catherine Creek Scamper Friday in Union. Here's a look at Joseph and Wallowa:

Joseph

On the team are freshman Robert Baldwin; juniors Julian Moro, Seth Watson and Kyle Clough; seniors Derrek Layton and Kevin Ryan; freshman Lena Moro and junior Erica Howerton.

"We have a few good runners," Joseph coach John Moro said.

Clough finished 10th at state last year. Lena Moro was fourth at the junior high school district meet.

Coach Moro said Howerton has improved.

He also said he is looking for Layton and Ryan to break the 20-minute barrier this season.

Ryan accomplished that last year.

Wallowa

The Cougars have a full boys and girls team.

On the team are senior Lindsay Easom (first year); juniors Samantha Silveira (third year) and Caitlin Turner (second year); sophomore Victoria Silveira (second year); and freshmen Lenise Lewis (first year) and Mallory Turner (first year high school, fourth year competitively).

Mallory Turner was the No. 1 finisher for the Cougars at the Hermiston Invite. Out of 94 runners, she came in 16th with a time of 21 minutes, 29 seconds. Caitlin Turner was 51st.

Coach Jess Turner said the girls look to be competitive at district.

Rounding out the boys team are seniors Lee Phelps (fourth year high school, sixth year competitively) and Alex Hart (first year); juniors Samuel Brainard (fifth year competitively) and Tanner Beglau (fourth year competitively); and sophomore Riley Wortman (third year competitively).

Coach Turner said he is not sure how the boys will line out.

Overall, Coach Turner said the team is conditioning and not worried on where it finishes.
