ELGIN — Record crowds continued to pour into the Elgin Stampede grounds all weekend, and on Sunday they were rewarded with gorgeous weather and exciting rodeo action.

A total of $36,831.25 was handed out to the winning cowboys.

There weren't a lot of high scores — just three in the 80s — but the action was wild.

Cameron Mulrony of Pomeroy, Wash., and Cole Harvey of Hermiston tied for first in the bull riding, each scoring an 80.

Max Fortmuller of DeWinton, Alberta, Canada, was one of a handful of Canadian rodeo competitors. Like many of the rodeo competitors in Elgin, he's a young man with big dreams.

He picked up Mulrony's winning check for him, but while he didn't have a particularly good day, he thinks he did have a great weekend.

Fortmuller, a pro rookie, put in the frequent traveler miles this weekend — and for a good reason. He competed in two Washington rodeos — Cheney and Chehalis — as well as Elgin the past few days, trying to earn his way to the biggest rodeo in his native country.

He said he was leading the Cheney rodeo with a score of 78 when he left for Elgin.

"I could've won it in Cheney," he said. Fortmuller also had an 80 in Chehalis and believed he was in the money.

Fortmuller said he came to Elgin to try and pick up points to gain a full permit, but this might be the last Elgin Stampede he comes to.

If Fortmuller did gain enough points this weekend, he would be eligible to compete next year in the Calgary Stampede, the same weekend as the Elgin Stampede.

It would be a dream come true for Fortmuller if he did in fact qualify for Calgary.

"I'm climbing up the totem pole," he said. "(Going to Calgary), that's the goal for sure. That'd be sweet."

Ross Hartman of Redmond won the saddle bronc with an 80.

John Alps of Madras won the first go of the steer roping with a time of 12.2, while Mike Beers of Powell Butte won the second go with a time of 11.8, but Jack Purchase of Pendleton had the best average of 38.3.

Beers was the big money winner over the weekend, earning $1,882.44 in the steer roping and calf roping.

Rick Bradley of Brentwood, Calif., won the bareback riding with a score of 77, while Tom White of Prosser won the calf roping with a time of 9.1.

Buster Barton of Walla Walla won the steer wrestling with a time of 4.6, and the team of T.J. Collett (Vernal, Utah) and Dusty Morse (Ogden, Utah) won the team roping with a time of 6.0.

Kelly Kaminski of Bellville, Texas, won the barrel racing with a time of 17.69.
