WOLVERINES TAKE BITE OUT OF LA GRANDE
If revenge is a dish best served cold, Weiser running back Bryce Svedin and his teammates decided that Friday night, one year in the cooler was just about enough.
"Last year La Grande made us look like a bunch of wimps," said Svedin after running for 193 yards and two touchdowns in Weiser's 46-24 win over La Grande. "This year we knew we pretty much had the same team from last year and so did they, so this was a game we'd been thinking about for awhile.
"We stepped it up tonight. We came out fired up and never quit."
Led by Svedin, who also passed for a touchdown, Weiser capitalized on five La Grande turnovers in the win, scoring a touchdown after each Tiger miscue.
La Grande produced some firepower of its own in the form of quarterback Landon Weaver, who gave Weiser fits on its way to improving to 3-0, throwing for 202 yards and three touchdowns.
Weaver also led La Grande in rushing with 56 yards on seven carries.
La Grande, losers of two straight, fell to 1-2 on the year.
"We need to learn how to handle adversity," Weaver said. "I think it's a 100 percent effort or nothing. There's no individual anything to it, it's a team."
Weaver and Trent Evins split time as the Tigers' quarterback for the third time this season.
Weiser opened a 12-0 lead in the first quarter off of a four-yard touchdown run by Svedin and a 33-yard touchdown pass from Sam Lancaster to Bobby Hopkins.
La Grande got on the board after defensive end Tad Fox blocked a Weiser punt and scooped up the loose ball and returned it 32 yards for a score.
After another Weiser score, Weaver hooked up with Evins from 23 yards out to make the score 18-12 at halftime.
"When Weaver's on the field, you let him loose and the kid just flat makes plays," said Weiser head coach John Srholec. "He makes touchdown passes when he should be sacked and turns losses into big gains."
Svedin found Chase Harberd for a 23-yard touchdown pass for the first score of the second half, giving Weiser a 24-12 lead.
On the next La Grande possession, Evins was picked off for the third time, and Weiser took the ball back and scored again, this time on a 17-yard Svedin run to go up 32-12.
Weaver hooked up with Kelly Burgess and Evins again for touchdown strikes in the fourth quarter, but Weiser answered with touchdowns of its own each time.
"It was a rematch in many ways because we both have so many players back from last year," Srholec said. "But as much as we're better from last year, so is La Grande. They're a good football team."
La Grande travels to Middleton Friday. Game time is 6 p.m.
