WOMEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL: Mountaineers rally past Whitworth
WALLA WALLA, Wash. — Brittney Newcomb scored 18 of her 27 points in the first half to lead the Eastern Oregon University women's basketball team to a 77-71 victory over Whitworth College Friday.
The win is the 11th of the season for the Mountaineers.
Eastern Oregon jumped all over the Pirates in the first 4-1/2 minutes of the game, opening the contest on a 16-4 run. Newcomb and Taylor Riley sparked the run, scoring 11 of the 16 points.
Whitworth battled back to take a five-point lead, 41-36, before the Mountaineers battled back, going on a 10-0 run to close out the first half with a 46-41 lead.
Whitworth came out and scored the first eight points of the second half to grab an early three-point lead in the half. However, the lead did not last long as Eastern Oregon answered right back and took a 50-49 lead.
After regaining the lead, the Mountaineers did not trail again in the contest.
The Mountaineers outscored Whitworth 36-20 in the paint and held a 24-17 advantage in scoring off the bench.
Nyesha Joseph added 12 points for Eastern and Riley chipped in with 10.
Kendra Lahue led Whitworth with 20 points, while KC McConnell added 16 and Kayla Johnson and Kendra Knutsen each had 12.
Eastern Oregon returns to the court today in the final game of the Kim Evanger Raney Classic against Whitman College. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
