COOL KUULEI: Wallowa’s Kuulei Delatori swings for a double during the Cougars’ season-ending loss to Riddle Friday. The Observer/PAUL HARDER WALLOWA — A great season ended on a bitter note. Wallowa’s softball
team’s mental and physical mistakes cost them during a 6-1 loss Friday
in the Class 2A/1A quarterfinals.
“Without a few of those mistakes, it’s a different game,” Wallowa
head coach Rob Burns said. “I’m not sure if the girls were a little
tight or what. It just didn’t work out for us today.”
Riddle got on the board with the help of an error in the second
inning. A single and an error advanced a runner to second. Kuulei
Delatori tried to work out of trouble, striking out the next two
batters. A two-out single got the Irish on the board.
Wallowa looked to respond with two base runners on to lead off the second inning. A base running error turned into a strikeout-throwout double play.
The Cougars had a chance with two on and one out in the third, but left two runners stranded.
“Riddle is a really well coached team,” Burns said. “They didn’t make any mistakes. We just couldn’t get anything going.”
Riddle broke through in the fourth inning, scoring four times. However, none of the runs were earned.
With the bases loaded and two outs, a dropped fly ball allowed two runs to score. A double by Stevie Hooley drove in two more runs.
Wallowa finally broke through in the fifth. McKenzie Shelton opened the inning with a triple. Delatori picked up the RBI on a fielder’s choice.
Delatori earned the loss. She allowed six runs, one earned in seven innings.
“It’s was a great season,” Burns said. These girls have nothing to hang their heads about. No one thought they would make it this far.”
