Eastern Oregon’s NAIA quest ends with 77-53 defeat

POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. — The Eastern Oregon University Mountaineers’ dream of making a long run in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Division 2 men’s national tournament was dashed harshly with a 77-53 loss at the hands of Midlands (Neb.) Wednesday.

Galen Gullie ripped the Mountaineer defense for 21 points, while being perfect from the outside and the charity line. Gullie hit all five of his long-range shots, while sinking all four free throws.

The Warriors held a 12-point lead at halftime (37-25) and pulled away in the second half with a 40-28 run.

Midland finished the game hitting more than 50 percent of the Warriors’ shots (26 of 51), while the Mountaineers struggled, hitting 30 percent.

The Mountaineers were cold from the outside, hitting four of 26 3-point attempts in the game — 15 percent.

The Warriors finished the game hitting seven of 14 3-point shots (50 percent).

In addition to Gullie, the Warriors got 12 points from Jerome Vaughn and 11 each from Ben Imig and Brandon Williams. James Parrott put in nine points.

The Mountaineers were led by Jason Mumm with 18 points, while Zach Anderson finished with 11.

Derek Maloney scored five, while Kyllian Wood and Michael Crane added four points each. Cody Thurmond scored three. Anthony Brown, E.J. Manley, Kalvin Johanson and Tony Eackles had two points each.

The Mountaineers ended the season 28-5 after being No. 1 in the nation for five straight weeks in February.
