Welch takes fifth at state meet

EUGENE — Amanda Welch finished fifth overall in the 4A state cross country championships at Lane Community College Saturday.

The La Grande sophomore was timed in 19:46 for the 5,000-meter course, and was one second behind fourth-place finisher Nevina DeLuca of Phoenix.

Welch was competing as an individual in the race, with Crook County and Ridgeview grabbing the team berths in the recent district championships.

Welch was competing as an individual in the race, with Crook County and Ridgeview grabbing the team berths in the recent district championships.

La Salle won the team title with 54 points, followed by Klamath Union (70), Molalla (76), Scappoose (175) and Siuslaw (fifth, 184). Crook County was 10th (240) and Ridgeview finished 14th (292).

Katie Potter of Siuslaw was the individual winner in the race with a time of 18:56.

In the boys race, La Grande’s Elliott Jonasson placed 38th in 17:40.

The boys title was won by Siuslaw with 29 points after the team took the top two places. Matthew Campbell and Mitchell Butler both were timed in 15:49 when they finished together.

North Valley was second with 52 points, followed by La Salle (93), Hidden Valley (122) and fifth place Scappoose (198).

Baker placed 11th in the boys race (255) while Crook County was 12th (255). Crook County’s Grayson Munn beat GOL champion Nic Maszk of Baker to the finish line by three seconds to take 15th overall (16:54). Maszk was 16th in 16:57.
