West overcomes early deficit to defeat East squad, 33-23, in 61st annual Shrine Game

BAKER CITY — The West had to rally in the first and fourth quarters before pulling out a 33-23 victory in the 61st annual East-West Shrine All-Star Football Game Saturday at Bulldog Memorial Stadium.

The win evens the overall series at 29-29-3.

After spotting the East a 7-0 lead when Baker’s Dane Bachman ran the opening kickoff back 99 yards for a touchdown, the West scored 19 straight points to lead 19-7 after one quarter.

Bachman, who will play at the College of the Siskiyous this fall, opened the scoring 15 seconds into the game when he took the opening kickoff at the East 1-yard line and broke up the middle of the field.

Bachman outran the West defense, stiff-armed kicker Ryan Comstock, the last man he had to beat, at the West 30 and scooted into the end zone.

The rest of the first period belonged to the West.

Santiam Christian quarterback Grant Schroeder, who will play at George Fox this fall, connected on three first-quarter touchdown passes.

Two of those passes, for 72 yards and 50 yards, were caught by Madras’ Devin Ceciliani, who will play at Western Oregon this fall.

The first came two plays after the Bachman score.

Schroeder found Ceciliani in the right flat and the speedy Madras receiver outran the East defense for the touchdown.

On the second TD, Schroeder found Ceciliani open along the right sideline for the score. The closest player to Ceciliani was West teammate Paul Revis (Scappoose).

The third TD pass was caught by Zach Olson of Banks.

On the play, Schroeder found Olson alone near the left sideline from 13 yards out.

The East then answered, using scoring runs by Brandon Williams of Cascade Christian and Cascade’s Cody Crawford, and a field goal by Williams to take a 23-19 lead early in the fourth period.

Williams cut the West’s lead to 19-14 with 24 seconds left in the first half, scoring on a 2-yard run.

The touchdown was set up by a trick play.

With the ball on the West 33, the East attempted a triple reverse. The West defense broke the play up, but Bachman, who got the second handoff, lateraled the ball to Ontario quarterback Trampis Waite while falling backwards. Waite then found Central’s Kelton Chapman with a first-down pass at the West 2-yard line. Williams scored on the next play.

The East regained a 20-19 lead with 4:23 left in the third quarter, thanks to the legs of Cascade quarterback Cody Crawford.

The East started on its own 20 and used nine consecutive running plays to take the lead.

Crawford carried the ball five times on the drive, scoring from the 13.

The third period ended with the East leading, 20-19.

Williams boosted the East lead to 23-19 with 9:32 left on an 18-yard field goal.

Then, it was all West. Forrest Garcia (Dayton) scored twice on runs to give the West the lead for good.

Garcia got the ball rolling when he fielded an East punt at the West 4 and raced 49 yards to the East 46 with 5:18 left.

Four plays later, Garcia gave the West a 26-23 lead with an 8-yard touchdown run.

The East then turned the ball over on downs, and
Garcia needed just one play, a 31-yard burst up the middle, to complete the scoring.

The West finished with 434 yards in total offense.

Schroeder was 16-of-23 passing for 242 yards.

Garcia led the West runners with 63 yards on five carries.

Ceciliani caught six passes for 180 yards.

The East finished with 273 yards in total offense.

Waite, who committed to play at Eastern Oregon University, was 5-of-11 passing for 77 yards.

Bachman caught five passes for 74 yards.

Sweet Home’s Wade Paulus led the East runners with 76 yards on a dozen carries.
