Westermann named new EOU softball coach

The Eastern Oregon University softball team will have a new leader next season, as EOU Interim Athletic Director Anji Weissenfluh announced the hiring of Betsy Westermann as the team’s new head coach.

Westermann joins the Eastern staff after spending the past year as an assistant coach with Dakota State University in Madison, S.D.

“We are very excited about the addition of Betsy to our staff,” Weissenfluh said. “She has a strong drive to be successful as a head coach, and I believe that attitude will carry over to her players. I am excited to watch her take the softball program to new heights.”

Westermann replaces the recently departed Aaron Jackson.

While at Dakota State, Westermann held a variety of roles. She was the head defensive coach, academic supervisor, recruiting coordinator, head newsletter creator/editor, head of field maintenance and was in charge of inventory.

“I am extremely excited for this opportunity to come to Eastern Oregon,” Westermann said. “I look forward to starting and being a part of the Mountaineer team.”

Before joining the Dakota State staff, Westermann spent four months at Black Hills State University as an assistant coach.

During her time with the Yellow Jackets, she developed weekly strength and running workouts, developed infield and outfield drills to be done daily and recruiting

Westermann also spent two years as a graduate assistant coach at Northern State University.

While attending Jamestown, Westermann was a three-year starter as a middle infielder for the Jimmies. During her senior year, she was named all-conference and gold glove award winner for her work at second base.
