YOUNG ELGIN TEAM NEEDS MORE CLASS TIME ON FIELD

By Pat Perkins

Observer Staff Writer

ELGIN Ed Schumacher stopped a player outside the Elgin High School locker room and praised him for listening to an early game instruction and carrying it out.

The Elgin football coach will do a lot of teaching this season, and the only way the Huskies will improve after Umatillas 46-0 victory Friday will be for the players to absorb their lessons like sponges.

Were just as green as we looked, Schumacher said after the game stopped with six minutes remaining because of the 45-point mercy rule. Well get better. Thats why I wanted to have a game early.

The game felt like a first time for the Huskies. Their offense hadnt scrimmaged against a full 11 players. Quarterback Blake Eckstein hadnt seen defensive coverage. A few key players were sick or injured.

Umatilla took advantage by running the ball right past Elgin. The Vikings had 302 yards rushing, including 135 by senior Bruno Ybarra. Junior Chris Wyland scored four touchdowns, including on a game-ending, 37-yard interception return.

Most of Elgins yards came up the middle. Thats where Eckstein, a sophomore, connected on eight of 16 passes for 93 yards. Senior Jake Williams had just 18 yards rushing, and most of that came on a long run up the middle late in the game.

Elgin had a few moments defensively, especially in the second quarter when it effectively stuffed the run.

Its just getting everybody doing it every play, Schumacher said.

That will be his task as teacher as the Huskies prepare for Riverside.

Well take the game film, study it, and we can learn the things that were effective and how they were effective.

Prince scores three touchdowns for Union

UNION Shae Princes 73-yard opening kickoff return set the tone for Union in its 45-14 win over Weston-McEwen Friday.

The Bobcats never let the visiting Weston-McEwen TigerScots get close as they racked up 337 yard rushing.

Even the passing game worked well. Lucas Maples completed 4-of-6 passes for 88 yards and two touchdowns.

We had a well-rounded game, Union coach Wayne Herron said. Our running backs ran hard and our line did an effective job of getting off the ball.

The defense started slowly, but came on in the second quarter, allowing only two rushing yards.

I saw the (defense) mature as the game went on, Herron said.

Mike Maley, who scored on a 46-yard run and caught a 19-yard pass, both in the third quarter, led Union with 82 yards rushing and 49 yards receiving.

C.W. Dunbar added 80 yards on the ground. Prince, who scored on runs of two and three yards in the first and fourth quarters, had 56 yards rushing.

Jeremy Shankel, who snagged two passes for 39 yards, scored on a 30-yard pass in the first quarter.

On defense, Ace Clark and Prince had 11 tackles apiece. Clark added a fumble recovery and a sack. A.T. Warren was in on seven tackles and recovered three fumbles.

Powder Valley starts season with victory

STANFIELD Brody Turner and Todd Baxter combined to score all of Powder Valleys points in a 26-8 victory Friday over Perrydale in the opening game of the Oregon High School 8-Man Football Classic at Stanfield High School.

Baxter had touchdown passes of 50 and 55 yards to Turner in the first half. Turner had a 1-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and Baxter had a 3-yard scoring run in the second quarter.

Baxter threw some really nice passes in the first half, Powder Valley coach Alan Stanfield said. In the second half, we were having trouble protecting him. They figured out a way to get behind our guys.

Riley Martin was Powders top defensive player, Stanfield said.

The 8-Man Classic continues today at Stanfield and Hermiston high schools, including a 5:30 p.m. game between Cove and St. Paul at Stanfield.

Enterprise shuts out, gets shut out in Baker

BAKER CITY Enterprise went from one extreme to the other Friday.

Playing in Bakers one-quarter football jamboree, Enterprise beat Pilot Rock 14-0 before falling to Baker 18-0.

It felt great to get out there, Enterprise coach Randy Morgan said.

Enterprise held Pilot Rock to 4 yards rushing. Kyle Crawford scored on a 70-yard punt return and James Huffman had a 1-yard quarterback sneak for the other touchdown. Crawford kicked both extra points.

Offensively, Crawford led Enterprise with 33 yards rushing on three carries against Pilot Rock. He was held to 12 yards on six carries when Enterprise played Baker.

Theyve got a real athletic team with some big, strong athletes, Morgan said of Baker.

For the day, Joe Osborn was in on eight tackles and blocked one extra-point kick. Eric Stangel was in on seven tackles and blocked an extra point. Jarod Osborn added six unassisted tackles.

Enterprise hosts Waitsburg, Wash., Friday.
