MCALLASTER HONORED AS TOP LEGION COACH Wes McAllaster has been named the American Legion Class A coach of the year for Oregon. This summer, McAllaster coached the La Grande Rain Roofing team to the American Legion Northwest Regional Tournament championship, the highest level for Class A teams. Rain Roofing had a 31-9 record and finished its season with a 15-game winning streak, sweeping the district, state and regional tournaments. EASTERN HOSTS ANNUAL BASKETBALL CLINIC Eastern Oregon Universitys annual boys and girls basketball clinic will be Saturday morning at Quinn Coliseum. Registration is from 8:30 to 9 a.m. at the coliseum, and the clinic, for children in grades 1-6, runs from 9 a.m. to noon. Participants receive instruction from Eastern mens basketball coach Art Furman and his players. They also receive a T-shirt and tickets to upcoming mens and womens basketball games. The clinic emphasizes skill development, personal development and fun. The cost is $20 per participant, with a family rate of $15 per child. For information call Furman at 962-3569. LG Little League meets Sunday La Grande Little League will meet at 7 p.m. Sunday at the La Grande High School library. FRYREAR GIVEN AWARD BY STATE COUNCIL La Grandes Denny Fryrear has been selected to receive the Mayors Certificate Fitness Leadership Award from the Oregon Governors Council for his work in promoting health and physical fitness. Fryrear has been a member of the City of La Grandes parks and recreation committee since 1991 and has been the skate park committee chairman. LHS ALUMNI GATHER FOR BASKETBALL GAME More players are being sought for the inaugural La Grande High School boys basketball alumni game Saturday. The game starts at 6:30 p.m. at the high school. Alumni who would like to play are encouraged to call coach Aaron Mills at 663-0537. EIGHT TIGERS TAPPED FOR ALL-STAR HONORS La Grande High School soccer player Greg Schuft has been named the Eastern Oregon Leagues boys player of the year. Schuft, who was also a first-team all-state forward, was one of five Tigers on the first team. The others were defender Aaron Nebeker (also an honorable mention all-state player), forward Seth Pennington, midfielder Johan Soderlund and goalkeeper Dustin Fuchs. Second-team honors went to forward Matt Nightingale and midfielder Casey Sheehy. Midfielder Collin Eder received honorable mention. |
