Cougar zone may close early

SALEM — Cougar hunting in Zone A (Coast/North Cascades) could close early this year as it did in 2011.

At this time, 117 cougars have been taken. ODFW expects additional cougars could be taken, and the zone closed, within the next few days.  The quota for the zone is 120. Once that many cougars are killed, hunting in the zone closes until the season reopens on Jan. 1, 2014. Cougars may still be killed in the zone if they are threatening livestock, pets or human safety.

Hunters need to check the ODFW hunting website for the most current information and an announcement informing hunters when the zone has closed.

ODFW closely tracks the take of cougars. Hunters and any landowner who kills a cougar due to damage or public safety issues must check in the cougar’s skull and hide (with proof of sex) at an ODFW office within 10 days of harvest. During the check-in, ODFW collects data to estimate the cougar’s age.

Hatchery to hold meeting

ALSEA — The Oregon Hatchery Research Center Advisory Committee will meet Mondayfrom 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the ODFW Adair District Office, 7118 NE Vandenberg Ave., Adair Village.

The meeting is open to the public and an opportunity for public comment is scheduled.

Reasonable accommodations will be provided as needed for individuals requesting assistive hearing devices, sign language interpreters or large-print materials at all ODFW public meetings. Individuals needing these types of accommodations may call the ODFW Director’s Office at 800-720-6339 or 503-947-6044 at least 24 hours in advance of the meeting.
