Nortonís, Grange plan for future

LOSTINE — Assessing the damage continues in Lostine where Norton’s Welding and the Southfork Grange were destroyed by fire Feb. 8.

Ron Hayes of Joseph Electric restored the electrical system on Norton’s shop that was only partially burned allowing mechanics to get back to work. Other work is being done at a garage a half mile away.

Owner Krag Norton said he has the go-ahead from insurance adjustors to remove the rubble where his office was so that he and his crew can start rehabbing the remaining the site. He said he wanted to go through the burned debris carefully to salvage what he could.

Norton said he planned to have a new office and the shop-space rebuilt in the coming months.

The welding shop’s phone number, 541-569-2436, is transferred to Norton’s auto body shop down the street. Norton said office work is being taken care of off-site for the time being.

June Colony of the Southfork Grange, which was also destroyed in the fire, said, “We are all ready to rebuild and keep supporting our local community’s needs.”

State Fire Marshal Scott Goff said it appeared combustible materials too close to a heating device in Norton’s office was the cause of the fire.
