Valley Reformed Church moves meetings
Valley Reformed Church will be meeting in the conference room of the Union County Extension building, 10507 N. McAlister (across from Bronson's) in Island City, through March 27.

Methodist Church hosts ecumenical Good Friday service
On Good Friday at 7 p.m. the La Grande United Methodist Church congregation will be joined by congregants of the other "Fourth Street Churches": First Christian Church, First Presbyterian Church, St. Peter's Episcopal Church and Zion Lutheran Church. The service, which is open to the community, will include special music and prepare worshippers to ponder the impact of Christ's death and await the coming Resurrection. The Methodist Church is located at 1612 Fourth St.
Bread, cheese served Maundy Thursday
St. Peter's Episcopal Church in La Grande will observe Palm Sunday, also known as the Sunday of the Passion, with Holy Eucharist at 9 a.m. The Rev. Kathryn Macek will preside. The service will begin in the parish hall with the Blessing of the Palms, followed by a procession to the sanctuary and a dramatic reading of the Passion narrative from the Gospel According to St. Luke.
A midweek service of Healing and Holy Communion will be offered Wednesday at 12:15 p.m. in the chapel. On Thursday at 6 p.m. in the parish hall, the church's traditional Maundy Thursday bread and cheese supper with Holy Communion will take place, followed by the stripping of the altar. St. Peter's will join with the "Fourth Street Churches" for a Good Friday service at the La Grande United Methodist Church at 7 p.m.
Centering Prayer is offered Tuesdays and Morning Prayer from the Book of Common Prayer is offered Thursdays. Both services are at 8:30 a.m. in the chapel.
'The Healthy Church' studied before service
Pastor Phil Garwood will be preaching from John 4:43-54 at the 11 a.m. worship service at Grace Bible Church in La Grande. It will be a message of healing and faith. The congregants are studying "The Healthy Church" series at 9:30 a.m. prior to the service.
Passion story told from Judas' perspective
Pastor Ray Smith will perform "Call Me Judas, Betrayer," a monologue written by David P. Polk, at the La Grande First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) 10 a.m. service on Palm Sunday. The perspective of Judas comes from Matthew 26-27. There will also be a palm processional by the children.
On Maundy Thursday a light supper will be served in the fellowship hall at 5:30 p.m., followed by a worship service in the sanctuary at 6:30. All are welcome to share in the retelling of The Last Supper story and partake of Communion. On Good Friday, the church will participate in an ecumenical service at the United Methodist Church at 7 p.m.
Jesus spent his last week teaching
The Holy Week of Jesus Christ's Passion begins this Sunday, and Faith Lutheran Church's Divine Service will begin at 11 a.m. with a procession of palm branches as a reminder of Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem. During the following week, Jesus "stirred up the people all over Judea by His teaching" (Luke 23:5).
Faith Lutheran will have a Maundy (Mandate) Thursday service at 7 p.m. and a Good Friday Tenebrae service (Service of Darkness) at 7 p.m.
Zion offers pair of Bible studies
Zion Lutheran Church in La Grande will worship at 9:30 a.m. with Pastor Colleen Nelson. Palm Sunday will be celebrated with a procession of palms from the fellowship hall to the sanctuary at the beginning of the service. Sunday school for children is available during the sermon. Fellowship and Fair Trade coffee follow the service.
Monday there will be a Bible study at the home of Cathy Lease, 67038 Hunter Rd., in Summerville. Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. there will be a women's Bible study, and at 6:30 p.m. the StudentWorshipArtTeam will meet; both groups meet at the church. The congregation will celebrate Good Friday at a Tenebrae service at 7 p.m. at the La Grande United Methodist Church.
Good Friday choir practices for service
Palm-Passion Sunday will be celebrated during the 9:30 a.m. worship service at the First Presbyterian Church in La Grande. The service will include a participatory reading of The Passion According to Luke, and the meditation will be "Jesus Is Lord." The Lord's Supper will also be served. Fellowship will follow the service.
On Maundy Thursday the congregation will join the La Grande First Christian Church's 6:30 p.m. service, and on Good Friday at 7 p.m. they will participate in an ecumenical service at the La Grande United Methodist Church.
Those who want to sing in the Good Friday choir should attend practice Saturday at 10 a.m. and again at 6 p.m. on Wednesday night. The practices will take place at the Methodist Church.
Lesson shows that God is always with us
Doug Edmonds at the La Grande Church of Christ will present the lesson "God with Us: The Beginning of the End." Continuing the journey through the Bible, the lesson will look at Isaiah's prophecy to those going into exile.
Communion is taken every Sunday. Sunday morning classes for all ages begin at 9:30 a.m., and the worship service follows at 10:30. "Kingdom Kids" is offered during the sermon for children age 2 through kindergarten.
Wednesday nights congregants meet for small groups at various homes. For private study, Pastor Doug recommends the free online World Bible School series. Also watch "Getting to Know Your Bible," DTV channel 377, Monday through Friday at 7:30 p.m.
