FREE FISHING WEEKEND SET DEC. 31-JAN. 1

• Anglers won’t need a fishing license, tag or endorsement anywhere in Oregon on Dec. 31 or Jan. 1. All other rules, including size and bag limits, will be in effect during the Free Fishing Weekend event.

HUNTERS NEED TO REPORT RESULTS

• Remember to complete a report for each 2016 deer, elk, bear, cougar and pronghorn tag you purchased—even if you didn’t hunt or weren’t successful. Report online by Jan. 31 at reportmyhunt.com or call 1-866-947-6339.

Grande Ronde, imnaha and Wallowa rivers

• Ice is making steelhead fishing difficult or impossible.

Hells Canyon Reservoir

• Approximately 500 steelhead have been released. Per the sportfishing regulations, these are considered trout and no Combined Harvest Card or Columbia Basin Endorsement is required.

Cougar hunting

• Cougars are common in Union, Baker and Wallowa counties. Focus on game rich areas with long ridgelines or saddles that cats typically travel. Setting up downwind of a deer or elk killed by a cougar can be productive. Nonresident hunters can include a cougar tag with others tags for only $14.50. All cougars taken must be checked in within 10 days of harvest; call for an appointment before check in.

Waterfowl hunting

• Hunting has been decent in Ladd Marsh Wildlife Area with the majority of hunters getting birds and a few getting limits each week. The recent cold snap will extremely limit huntable areas. For more specific water conditions please call the area office at 541-963-4954.
