Mounties sweep Beacons

Starting fresh and putting the regular season behind them was one of the focal points of the Eastern Oregon volleyball team as it entered the Cascade Collegiate Conference tournament Tuesday.

The Mountaineers not only started the tournament fresh, but strong.

Megan Bunn led the way with 13 kills and the No. 13 Mountaineers advanced to the CCC semifinals with a 25-14, 25-15, 25-20 sweep of Northwest Christian at Quinn Coliseum.

“Our goal going into tonight was that ‘it’s a fresh start,’” head coach Kaki McLean-Morehead said. “We get the opportunity to raise the bar and play the game how Mountie volleyball is supposed to be played. I think that they did a great job of doing that.”

EOU accomplished that goal with the balance on offense that has defined the team during its best matches and a defense that managed to get to nearly every kill attempt put down by the Beacons.

The Mountaineers also sped up the pace on offense, which helped feed into the offensive success, and made a point of being more aggressive on the attack.

“Our setters were pushing the tempo really well,” said Amanda Miller, who had 11 kills. “We’ve been working on connections the last few practices. We’ve also been working in the last couple weeks on not tipping in practice. We rarely tip in practice. We want to find a way to swing every single time.”
