IMBLER — Imbler students and staff invite all veterans to their annual Veterans Day celebration Nov. 9. Breakfast will be served to all attending veterans from

9 a.m. to 10 a.m. in the elementary school gym. The assembly follows in the high school gym. According to the event’s organizers, “We are looking forward to this opportunity to thank you for serving our country. It is because of your sacrifices that we continue to live in freedom.”

Members of the La Grande High School class of 1954 will meet for lunch Nov. 9. The gathering begins at 11:30 a.m. tomorrow at the Flying J.

Tri-County CWMA considers budget

ENTERPRISE — The Tri-County Cooperative Weed Management Area organization is hosting a preliminary budget meeting for the 2018 fiscal year at 10 a.m. Nov. 9 in the Wallowa Resources Conference Room in Enterprise. The purpose of the Tri-County CWMA is to facilitate cooperation among all land managers and landowners to manage noxious weeds in Baker, Union and Wallowa counties.

Businesses invited to join Veterans Day Parade

The 2017 La Grande Veterans Day Parade will begin at 11 a.m. Saturday. The lineup for the parade is at Hemlock Street and Adams Avenue at 10 a.m., and the parade will travel west along Adams Avenue from Hemlock Street. This year’s grand marshals are Gene and Jo Stephens. The parade is sponsored by American Legion Post 43. Businesses that would like to participate in this year’s parade may call Bob at 541-910-7557.

DAR presentation gives history of GRV beet industry

BAKER CITY — The next regular meeting of the Lone Pine Tree Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, whose membership includes Union and Baker counties, will take place Nov. 10 at the Sunridge Restaurant in Baker City. Lunch begins at 11 a.m. followed by the meeting at noon. The event will include a presentation by Meschelle Cookson on the history of the beet industry in the Grande Ronde Valley. Dance features music by Terry La Mont

The Union County Senior Center, 1504 N. Albany St., La Grande, invites the community to a dance Nov. 11 featuring live music by Terry La Mont. The doors open at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $3 at the door. Children younger than 12 get in free.

Forest Service waives fees in honor of Veterans Day

The U.S. Forest Service will waive fees at day-use recreation sites in Oregon and Washington Nov. 11-12 in honor of Veterans Day. This fee waiver includes many picnic areas, boat launches, trailheads, and visitor centers. Concession operations will continue to charge fees unless the permit holder wishes to participate.

“We hope that this time will serve as a way for our veterans and other visitors to find our national forests as a year-round respite, a place where they can take time out for themselves,” said Jim Peña, Regional Forester.

Historical society members share ‘old-time’ treasures

The Union County Historical Society will have a meeting and potluck at noon Nov. 11 in the log cabin at the Union County Fairgrounds in La Grande. Members are asked to bring “old-time” treasures to share.

Orders now being taken for take-away Thanksgiving dinner

The Union County Senior Center’s nutrition department will once again be offering take-away holiday meals for Thanksgiving. These traditional turkey dinners will be available for pick up Nov. 22 and will feed four people. Order forms can be picked up at Gerry’s desk at the center, 1504 N. Albany St., La Grande, or by contacting the nutrition department at 541-963-7532. Gift certificates are also available.

Union library sells cookbooks

With the holidays just around the corner, the Friends of the Union Carnegie Library are offering a sale of gently used cookbooks. The selection includes books on candy, cookies, bread, crockpot, holiday meals and more. Books are $2 for hardbacks and $1 for paperbacks and are on sale in the basement during library hours: 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesdays, 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursdays, and 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays.

Neighbors Together plans Thanksgiving dinner

Neighbors Together of Union County will be serving a community Thanksgiving dinner at the Presbyterian Friendship Center, 1204 Spring Ave., La Grande, on Thanksgiving Day. The midday meal is free, and donations will be accepted. To help organizers prepare, RSVP is encouraged and is possible on the Neighbors Together Facebook page or by emailing outreach.grv@gmail.com. Marine Corps celebrates 242nd birthday

Nov. 10 marks the 242nd birthday of the United States Marine Corps. A local celebration will begin at 6 p.m. at the American Legion Post No. 43, 301 Fir St., La Grande. There will be finger foods, a message from the Commandant of the Marine Corps and a cutting of the cake ceremony. Birthday cake will be served to all, after which sea stories will be shared by those in attendance. Marines and families of Marines are invited and asked to bring finger foods to share.
