Union County clubs and businesses are being challenged by Hope Chapter 13, Order of Eastern Star.

Eastern Star has raised $1,000 for regional and local American Red Cross organizations and is challenging other local organizations to meet or surpass this

contribution.

Ruth Marx, a past matron and Eastern Star officer, said she realizes that the amount collected ... is a mere drop in the bucket to the amount that is needed at this time.

Eastern Star has donated $500 to the Northeast Oregon Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund to help victims of the Sept. 11 terrorism attacks. Eastern Star also contributed $500 to the Eastern Oregon Chapter of the American Red Cross to help it meet its budget requirements.

Eastern Star is a philanthropic organization that supports many charities. In addition to the Red Cross, money the organization raises goes to the Oregon Heart Association, cancer research, the Shriners Hospital and much more.

Members of the Eastern Star are related to the Master Masons. This includes wives, daughters, mothers, widows, sisters, granddaughters or nieces of Ma- sons.

Eastern Star raises much of its money through the sale of Union County historic afghans. The afghans feature images of Union County sites and buildings.
