America waking up

to terrorism in world

At right is a partial list of terrorist organizations that operated throughout the world in 2000 and some facts you should know. Take a moment and look them over.

Americas sudden interest in terrorism as a result of the Sept. 11 attack on the World Trade Center towers and the Pentagon is a little late. Terrorism attacks have been carried out in almost every area of the world except the mainland of the United States. For several decades the Irish Republican Army has carried out a campaign of terror against citizens of Northern Ireland and Great Britain.

While most Americans seemed content to be more concerned about earning 20 percent on their 401Ks, our government leaders have turned a blind eye to the millions of dollars that were raised every year by IRA sympathizers who lived on our East Coast for this radical terrorist group that has killed and maimed thousands. Instead of working with the British government to eliminate this avowed terrorist organization, our country has glamorized them in movies and television. It is a wonder that the British have been as supportive of our current War on Terrorism.

Middle eastern terrorists have been killing other middle easterners for decades. The Egyptian Islamic Jihad, which has connections to Osama bin Laden, has carried out terrorist attacks against the Egyptian government and elected government officials. They are responsible for the assassination of former Egyptian President Anwar Sadat. Our own Congress and presidents have known of their involvement but have consistently turned away from helping the Egyptian government eliminate them.

For decades, the Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorist group has been killing Spanish citizens in their quest to create a separate country. These terrorists have killed countless government officials and civilians who have opposed their Marxist leanings. Their acts of terrorism have included shootings, bombings, kidnappings, and other malicious acts. And once again our government has been aware of these acts but has not spoken out on the international stage to end such attacks.

Americans have a tendency to awaken suddenly when someone comes along and smacks us in the face. Terrorism has been on the rise for more than two decades now, but it is only since the Sept. 11 attack that our countrys leaders are ready to spend billions of dollars fighting terrorists

We wonder how long will our country be united in this war against terrorism? There are dozens of terrorist organizations that wreak havoc on millions of people around the world.

If we arrest Osama bin Laden and eliminate his followers, will we feel vindicated? We hope not. Terrorism is much larger than one mad Saudi Arabian. We need to be freezing the assets of all these terrorist groups and working to shut them down. Until that happens, this war on terrorism will never completely be won.
