RICHLAND, Wash. The Union Bobcats girls cross country team had its best team finish ever at one of the elite high school meets in the region.

Unions girls were 14th as a team and fourth among schools in their division, which includes Class 3A schools from Oregon and Washington, at the 33rd annual Richland Invitational.

Union senior Stephanie Upshaw was 13th overall on what coach Tom Hayes calls a very demanding course that requires a very fast pace. Upshaw, running in the fastest of four flights, finished in 19 minutes, 59 seconds. She was 11th in Flight 4.

The meet draws teams from all over the region, including the nations top-ranked team, Mead High of Spokane.

At this meet we seek to experience a crowd, extreme speed, unfamiliar opponents we did all this and responded to the time, place, course rather well, Hayes said.

Unions Shannon Mitchell was eighth in Flight 3 at 20:49, with Ashley Sharratt 15th at 21:25. In Flight 2, Kara Baxter was 28th at 23:18 and Deborah Hachen was 35th at 25:53. Rosa Goodman was 35th in Flight 1 at 26:54.

Unions Jill Vorderstrasse was 60th in 25:15 in the JV girls race.

The Union boys also raced, but in the freshmen/sophomore and JV races. Jared Baxter was 62nd in the JV race at 19:41, with Dan Warburton 74th at 20:00.

In the freshmen/sophomore race, Bill Garrison was ninth in 18:03, Josh Steenstra was 46th in 20:05, and Brenn Sheehy was 67th in 21:02.
