SPECIAL OLYMPIANS MAKE MOST OF MEET

More than 30 athletes competed Saturday at a Blue Mountain Special Olympics-sponsored swim meet at the Eastern Oregon University pool.

Most of the athletes were from the Bend area, with eight from Milton-Freewater and seven from La Grande, Island City and North Powder.

Many of the athletes will compete Nov. 17-18 at a state meet in Beaverton.

The Blue Mountain Special Olympics team will send several local athletes to a sectional bowling competition this weekend in Hermiston. Athletes from that tournament will also qualify for the state bowling competition on the same November weekend as the state swim meet.

Medals were won by the following local athletes:

Jake Kilborn (Island City) 10-meter assisted swim, gold medal.

Cliff Young (La Grande) 100 freestyle, gold medal; 50 backstroke, bronze medal; 25 freestyle, silver medal.

Josh Ortega (La Grande) 50 freestyle, gold medal; 25 freestyle, gold medal.

Braden Trice (La Grande) 50 freestyle, bronze medal; 25 freestyle, fourth place.

Jason Franks (La Grande) 50 freestyle, fourth place; 25 freestyle, bronze medal.

Atheena McClaughry (North Powder) 100 freestyle, gold medal; 50 backstroke, silver medal; 25 freestyle, gold medal.

Neil Yocum (La Grande) 15 walk, bronze medal; 15 unassisted swim, silver medal.

Young/Trice/Franks/McClaughry 4x25 freestyle relay, silver medal.
