Weekend and evening cab service has resumed for the elderly and people with disabilities under a contract between Union County and the new Arc Cab Company.

The county commissioners voted Wednesday to renew the subsidy that was discontinued a few weeks ago. The county will spend up to $7,700 through June to subsidize cab rides in La Grande and Island City.

Under the subsidy, people who qualify may purchase tickets for $1 each. The tickets are sold at the Union County Senior Center.

Carlton Brownson of La Grande purchased vehicles from the former Blue Mountain Cab Company several weeks ago after Blue Mountain ended service.

Since then, the county has tightened the procedures for ticketing and billing. The county also provided a van fitted with a wheelchair lift to Blue Mountain Cab, but the countys administrative officer, Marlene Perkins, told the commissioners that the van has sustained damage, especially to one door.

That is a real concern, she said. When the van cant be used, well have to deal with that.
