EASTERN LOSES SEASON OPENER

November 16, 2001 11:00 pm

TACOMA The first six minutes went fine. It was the final 34 minutes that frustrated Eastern Oregon womens basketball coach Anji Weissenfluh.

Poor first-half shooting helped spell defeat for the Mountaineers in their season-opener against the Puget Sound Loggers, an 86-61 loss in Puget Sounds Tip-Off Classic.

The Loggers got 24 points and 11 rebounds from senior Julie Vanni, who scored her 1,000th career point during the game and became the eighth player in school history to do so.

The first six minutes of the ballgame we played really well, Weissenfluh said. We came out and ran, hit some open shots.

After that, it all went downhill. Our starters just did not play well. We were out of sync from the start.

Starting forwards Brooke Sellards and Julie Coffin combined to shoot 2-for-13 from the field and had just four rebounds. Guard Sellards and point guard Tricia Haddock led Eastern with nine points each, and guard Jamie Jo Cant scored eight, but much of that came late in the game.

Still, it was the first game for the Mountaineers and Weissenfluh wasnt too worried going into todays 2 p.m. game against Trinity of Texas.

If our starters were playing well and we were still getting beat, then we would be concerned, Weissenfluh said.

Puget Sound came out in a zone defense, which frustrated the Mountaineers.

Offensively we need to be able to attack when people play in a zone, she said. We just really werent prepared to play (against) a zone.

Point guard Haddock, at 5-foot-4 the shortest player on the floor, led Eastern with eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.

We rebounded real well, so it allowed Trish to come down and get those boards and start our fast break, Weissenfluh said.

The coach said she also got a strong performance off the bench from forward Michelle Kinley, who had four rebounds in 14 minutes.
