A 19-year-old Boise man died Sunday evening following a motor vehicle accident on Interstate 84 east of La Grande.

Eugeni Vasilchenko of Boise was driving a 1995 Honda Civic on an icy highway at the entrance to Ladd Canyon near milepost 270 about 8:45 p.m. when it struck the rear of a vehicle being towed by a 1994 Toyota pickup, according to Oregon State Police.

Vasilchenko was taken to Grande Ronde Hospital where he died, police said. A passenger in the Honda, Olga Drozdyuk, 18, also of Boise, suffered minor injuries and was treated at the hospital and released.

Police did not report any injuries to Sifredo Tejada Cartagena, 52, of El Salvador, the driver of the Toyota, or to the Toyota passenger, Cesar Tejada Cartagena, 19, also of El Salvador.

The accident is under investigation, but police said that neither alcohol nor drugs was a factor. I-84 was extremely icy Sunday and chains were required on commercial vehicles.
