Safeways 1,759 stores took in more than $31 billion in 2000, and sales at the new La Grande store, which opened with a ribbon-cutting event early Wednesday, will certainly add to that.

While Jerry Hoffman, vice president for marketing and operations manager of the Portland division of Safeway, said sales in La Grande are all but certain to increase, he said the corporation does not reveal individual store revenues.

But we have made a commitment that we will be competitive in this community, he said.

The parking lot at the store on East Adams Avenue was nearly full through most of the day as the curious looked over the spacious building and shopped for items along its many aisles.

Hoffman, who was joined by other Safeway officials and La Grande city council members and other city dignitaries at the 8 a.m. opening ceremony, said the local store had 400 applicants for 60 new jobs. So far, 46 people have been hired, he said.

Well make this the best store in Eastern Oregon, Hoffman said.

Safeway closed its store at Adams Avenue and Fourth Street on Tuesday night and opened the new store at 6 a.m.
